wasting time (i hope we learned)

happy labor day. as gustav makes landfall today, i can't help but think about katrina, and remember all the death and wreckage and water. i remember the mess. i remember how the government wasn't much of a help. i remember going to mississippi a couple of years ago to help with some of the rebuilding effort there, and being amazed at how raped the land still seemed to be.

i was at revelation generation this weekend, which is a small scale christian music festival. i'm not really into much of the music that was featured there, but i always enjoy tobymac as an entertainer and showman (not as a theologian). the one band that i was very impressed with was the myriad, whom i have written about before. they only played a short set, but they were very good, at least in my opinion. one of their songs, the first track on their new album, is called "you waste time like a grandfather clock," which aside from having a very clunky title, is a song which always reminds me of our government's response to katrina. as i stood there and sang along with them, remembering my time on a roof in mississippi, i couldn't help but think about gustav, stomping through the caribbean on his way to the gulf coast. this time they got people out of new orleans, and all the politicians are saying the right things. i hope we have truly learned from our mistakes and don't waste time helping people who are stranded, hurt, or starving, no matter who they are or what neighborhood they are from.

here's the lyrics to the song. have a great day.

where were you a week ago?
when we gathered in the courtyard
where were you when we sang
and our song shook the ground
where were you a week ago?
when the churchbells started swinging
where were you when they rang
and angels came down

you waste like grandfather clock
imagine we start counting sandbags,
thats when we start counting sandbags

where were you a week ago?
when the green line started growing
where were you when it burst
and spread green the cloud
where were you a week ago
when the red sign wasn't sinking
where were you when it cracked
and spread fire about?

you waste time like a grandfather clock
you waste time like a grandfather clock
imagine we start counting sandbags,
thats when we start counting sandbags

and if God would part the clouds
do you think He'd be proud?

you waste time like a grandfather clock
you waste time like a grandfather clock
and thats when we start counting sandbags,
thats when we start counting sandbags

I would have LOVED to see tobymac.

I do not have any of his cd's but am thinking I should get at least one. suggestions?

I still do not own an mp3 or ipod, so those are not an option for me.

I just moved into a new church and tried to get a group together for RevGen. Several went, but I was unable to go. Maybe next year.

I, too, believe there are lessons to be learned from my/our past choices.

Greg I find it so troubling as I watch the news and see the reports of the Hurricane. the destruction that is coming to those places. We had a group go down two summers ago and those people were still recovering from the last one and I am sure this will not help at all. So the question is as you said, what have we learned.

i'm giving away the swamp

so this is a collage called swamp. i made it in february of last year. it is currently framed in a homemade, hand-painted frame. it is paper collage on a book binding panel. it is 7" x 10". and i am giving it away. i've been wanting to have a blog giveaway for some time, and the time has finally arrived. here's how it works. all you need to do is leave a comment on this post. by leaving a comment you are automatically entered into the contest (as long as your comment offers a way for me to get in touch with you, or you know that i know you). the contest will be open until next wednesday at noon, eastern standard time. at that time the contest will officially be closed and i will pick a random number. the person whose comment matches that number wins! for example, if i happen to pick the number 33, the thirty-third comment will win. oh, and one more rule: you can only post ONCE. if you win, i will send you the collage, signed by me, the artist, free of c...

bad haircuts (for a laugh)

everybody needs to laugh.  one good way i have found to make that happen is to do a simple google image search for 'bad haircut.'  when you do so, some of the following gems show up.  thankfully, my 9th grade school picture does NOT show up.  otherwise, it would certianly make this list!  please laugh freely and without inhibition.  thank you and have a nice day.

affirmed

i cannot express today the feeling i have. this picture that i found sort of expresses it but not really. for the last ten years i have poured myself into this vocation, daring to believe that God, the very God of all creation, has called me, even me, to this work. along the way many have affirmed me in this journey, but i have continued to work for the ultimate affirmation, ordination as an elder in the united methodist church. and now i have it. after two grueling (and i mean grueling in every possible sense, really) days i recieved the call today that the board voted to recommend me to the annual conference for ordination as an elder. and as i have already said, i cannot even begin to express the emotion i feel with words like relief, joy and satisfaction. there will be plenty of time for me to reflect on this and i will have more to say about it as i do that reflecting, but today is really a day for celebrating for me, and for thanking those who have journeyed with me and s...
