first day of spring

today, march 21, is the first day of spring. a day for listening to sufjan stevens or the innocence mission. a day for getting free iced coffees at dunkin' donuts, or free italian ices at rita's. its a day for remembering that one thing that never ever changes is the fact that everything changes. a day for celebrating the coming warmth and life. a day for putting a picture of a tulip on your blog. a day for wearing something pastel. the first day of spring.

i spent the morning in new york city, checking out some mission trip locales in brooklyn for our senior high mission trip this summer. it was cool to experience a little bit of a wednesday morning in brooklyn, to eat lunch at a dominican restaurant, and to get a free iced coffee.

i love the city. i love the energy. i love the architecture. i love the smells. i love that there is garbage everywhere (you should know that i have a deep love of garbage. the other night jack looked up at one of my collages that we having hanging on the wall in our bedroom, and he pointed to it and said, "garbage!"). i love the busyness. i love the pace. i love the diversity. i love the sounds. i wouldn't want to live in the city forever, but i would love to live there for a couple of years. part of me would love to trade in my car for a subway pass.

but i would miss road trips. and silence. and spring in the suburbs, which is full of of dunkin' donuts and rita's. which reminds me that i need to go. i'll talk to you again on the second day of spring, when there aren't so many things that are free.

Man...I haven't been to a Dunkin Donuts in forever. The last time was in Your Least Favorite City, and that was over five years ago. They tore down the last one in Minneapolis about a year later. Sigh...

the fact that you don't have a dunkin' donuts in your area is a travesty, pete. i would march down to the local/county/state governments and begin lobbying immediately.

seriously.

Thanks Greg, reading your blog made me remember that we need to put out the garbage.

Or we could just move to the east coast, as we threaten to do almost yearly...

I am so happy. I just found Love Spit Love's album on Itunes, in the Apple store. It has one of the best songs about change on it.

It's called "Change in the Weather" and one of my favorite lines is "the only thing you know is gonna stay the same is change".

I welcome Spring and all the changes that it brings.

We enjoyed water ice and iced coffee - two things I only go get because they're free. Matt was bummed that they don't include a free donut in the deal. I am much happier on this second day of spring - no free food, but it's warm and sunny!

bad haircuts (for a laugh)

everybody needs to laugh.  one good way i have found to make that happen is to do a simple google image search for 'bad haircut.'  when you do so, some of the following gems show up.  thankfully, my 9th grade school picture does NOT show up.  otherwise, it would certianly make this list!  please laugh freely and without inhibition.  thank you and have a nice day.

happiness is dry underwear

we started potty training jack on thursday. we followed a program called POTTY TRAIN IN ONE DAY, which, by the way, i think is kind of crazy. i mean, if someone were to offer you a book called, "ACHIEVE WORLD PEACE IN ONE DAY" i don't think you would take it seriously. and yet here we are, trying to accomplish an equally daunting task in one 24-hour period. it is intense. the day is shrouded in a lie because as soon as your happily diapered child wakes up you tell him that it is a big party. we had balloons and streamers and noisemakers and silly string - all the trappings of a legitimate party. but it is most certainly not a party. it is a hellishly exhausting day. as soon as jack got out of bed, we gave him a present: an anatomically correct doll that wets himself. jack named him quincy. several times quincy successfully peed in the potty and even had an accident or two in his "big boy underwear." he also dropped a deuce that looked and smelled sus...

i'm giving away the swamp

so this is a collage called swamp. i made it in february of last year. it is currently framed in a homemade, hand-painted frame. it is paper collage on a book binding panel. it is 7" x 10". and i am giving it away. i've been wanting to have a blog giveaway for some time, and the time has finally arrived. here's how it works. all you need to do is leave a comment on this post. by leaving a comment you are automatically entered into the contest (as long as your comment offers a way for me to get in touch with you, or you know that i know you). the contest will be open until next wednesday at noon, eastern standard time. at that time the contest will officially be closed and i will pick a random number. the person whose comment matches that number wins! for example, if i happen to pick the number 33, the thirty-third comment will win. oh, and one more rule: you can only post ONCE. if you win, i will send you the collage, signed by me, the artist, free of c...
