a win-win situation



sunday was a good day for me.  we started off with some great worship led by our youth as we celebrated youth sunday.  after church i came home, ate some pumpkin pasta and settled in to see the steelers play the undefeated minnesota vikings.  it was yet another heart attack-inducing game, but in the end the steelers were the victors, thanks to two incredible defensive scores on turnovers.  i am particularly enjoying the pictures above where the indecisive one (favre) is watching our backup linebacker, keyaron fox, run down the field with the ball, and the one in which james harrison is driving favre into the heinz field turf.  it reminds me of something i blogged about.  anyway, the steelers won their fourth in a row, moved to 5-2, and now have a bye week to rest up before facing the denver broncos.  all in all, they are in a pretty good place for this point in the season. 

but my day wasn't over.  a few hours later was the first pitch in game 6 of the american league championship series, angels and yankees at yankee stadium in the bronx.  it was a beauty by andy pettitte, and the yankees were able to win their 40th pennant in team history, which sends them on to the world series on wednesday to face the phillies. 

i know some of you tire quickly of sports posts, but you need to just understand that i'm at an incredible time in my life as a sports fan.  some fans go through their whole lives without their team reaching the pinnacle of their sport.  here i am in 2009 with the steelers having won the last superbowl and the yankees one of the last two teams competing to win the world series  (not to mention that my favorite college football team - the gators - are the reigning champs and are ranked #1 right now).  i won't have this forever.  the steelers and the yankees were both awful in the 80's, and there will be dry spells like that again.  so i have to appreciate this while i have it!

On behalf of Packer fans everywhere, I'd like to thank the Steelers for helping us in our division standings. :) It is no surprise to us to see Favre making big turnovers at key points in the game. It happened here all the time--especially as each season progressed. Hopefully your guys softened them up for our guys next weekend!

I dunno Greg. Maybe it's because I'm a little older and a Philly guy, but your post seems to beg me to understand your suffering as a fan of the Steelers and the Yankees. As a fan of the Eagles and the Flyers, in fact as a Philly sports fan period, I think you need to understand my suffering. Other than last year's Phils it was 1983 when Philly last tasted a major sports championship and that was in basketball.

bad haircuts (for a laugh)

everybody needs to laugh.  one good way i have found to make that happen is to do a simple google image search for 'bad haircut.'  when you do so, some of the following gems show up.  thankfully, my 9th grade school picture does NOT show up.  otherwise, it would certianly make this list!  please laugh freely and without inhibition.  thank you and have a nice day.

affirmed

i cannot express today the feeling i have. this picture that i found sort of expresses it but not really. for the last ten years i have poured myself into this vocation, daring to believe that God, the very God of all creation, has called me, even me, to this work. along the way many have affirmed me in this journey, but i have continued to work for the ultimate affirmation, ordination as an elder in the united methodist church. and now i have it. after two grueling (and i mean grueling in every possible sense, really) days i recieved the call today that the board voted to recommend me to the annual conference for ordination as an elder. and as i have already said, i cannot even begin to express the emotion i feel with words like relief, joy and satisfaction. there will be plenty of time for me to reflect on this and i will have more to say about it as i do that reflecting, but today is really a day for celebrating for me, and for thanking those who have journeyed with me and s...
