random sunday stuff

last night we went to a greek festival being held nearby. it is called opa! apparently, opa is a word that greeks shout out whenever they are happy. a quick word search online basically shows that it is a word that doesn't really have a meaning, other than to express happines or joy. we had jack shouting 'opa!' while we were there, and that made all the olive-skinned people there chowing down on lamb smile at us. shannon and i have always wanted to try greek food, so we went and sampled the gyros and souvlaki. we also watched some of the children do traditional greek dances in full costume. we had a good time, and jack enjoyed rocking the sunglasses. cade slept the entire time.

we are getting ready to have burgers on the grill this evening. there is nothing quite like it.

i've been quite under the weather this week. i had a cold, then i thought i had it beat the last couple of days, but it came back and bit me in the rear today.

speaking of being bitten in the booty, the yankees, already 9.5 games out of the lead in the american league east, just got swept by the angels. wow. i've been the one saying that it is a long season, and everything will level out, but, come on. the wheels are about to come off and its going to be a mess.

i am going to maine in a couple of weeks, and, to be honest, it is on my mind so much. what i mean by that is that i am really looking forward to vacation and some r. and r.

i'll end with this cute picture of our little jackson, pointing at his hand for some unknown reason and looking really cute after church today sitting at his own little picnic table in our sunroom. have a great sunday, and i'll try and post tomorrow.
peace.

awesome idea. so, you with the croatian dictionary - what should we call the festival?

let's begin plans right away. here are the categories:

music (very important)
food (also very important)
arts/crafts
costumes
dance
language/history

since there are 6 categories, each original member of the kids union can oversee 2 categories. we will call these individuals "categorical managers." in the cases where a spouse is present, the spouse will automatically be deemed "assistant to the categorical manager" (note: the title for the spouse is NOT 'assistant categorical manager' but is instead 'assistant TO the categorical manager.' this is an essential distinction).

what two categories would you prefer? i am considering music and food but i am flexible. please get back to me on this ASAP.

OPA!

You have no idea how much I love Greek food. In fact, I read about the upcoming Greek Food Festival at a local church last week and put it on our calendar already for the first week of JUNE! Oh my goodness I cannot wait.... I can smell the greekness already!

that picture of Jack touching his hand reminds me of something..... it's super cute.

I will take language and arts/crafts. Since i have no spouse, I will fully take the responsibility proudly. Good thing i have my dictionary and "how to speak Croatian" book...this means i will have to read past chapter one :) i will send you memos on the progress of stated festival. dobra dan!

Volim te.

ok good. i have no idea what you said. but it sounded festivalish, so i'm for it. yes!

looks like julie has got costumes and dance. will someone please let her know?

we will need to schedule a variety of conference calls and other meetings to pull this off. any chance you can meet the week of june 11th? i'll be in maine. maybe we can have a k.u. meeting.

(insert croatian goodbye word here),

The greek orthodox church down the road from us has there festival this week and I am very excited - I love Greek food! I would also be interested in attending the First Annual Croatian festival sponsored by the Milinovich family.

you see, i have a pet peeve about those who have a pet peeve about calling things 'the first annual.' here is my issue: people who have a problem with calling things 'first annual' are usually upset because it isn't annual yet, so how can you say that.

but its really a question of intent. we could call it the 'first ever' croatian festival. but then everyone would leave the event saying something like, "man, that was a great event. i enjoyed the croatian food and dance and history. that greg guy was particularly good looking. i wonder when they will ever hold the event again. maybe they will never have it again! oh no! what a shame. it was such a good event, too. oh well. i guess we are never going back."

now do you see what i mean? if we call it the 'first annual croatian festival,' then people can leave the event ready to go home and mark it on their calendar for next year. its all about intent. and i'm not going to let anyone's pet peeve stop me!

bad haircuts (for a laugh)

everybody needs to laugh.  one good way i have found to make that happen is to do a simple google image search for 'bad haircut.'  when you do so, some of the following gems show up.  thankfully, my 9th grade school picture does NOT show up.  otherwise, it would certianly make this list!  please laugh freely and without inhibition.  thank you and have a nice day.

happiness is dry underwear

we started potty training jack on thursday. we followed a program called POTTY TRAIN IN ONE DAY, which, by the way, i think is kind of crazy. i mean, if someone were to offer you a book called, "ACHIEVE WORLD PEACE IN ONE DAY" i don't think you would take it seriously. and yet here we are, trying to accomplish an equally daunting task in one 24-hour period. it is intense. the day is shrouded in a lie because as soon as your happily diapered child wakes up you tell him that it is a big party. we had balloons and streamers and noisemakers and silly string - all the trappings of a legitimate party. but it is most certainly not a party. it is a hellishly exhausting day. as soon as jack got out of bed, we gave him a present: an anatomically correct doll that wets himself. jack named him quincy. several times quincy successfully peed in the potty and even had an accident or two in his "big boy underwear." he also dropped a deuce that looked and smelled sus...

i'm giving away the swamp

so this is a collage called swamp. i made it in february of last year. it is currently framed in a homemade, hand-painted frame. it is paper collage on a book binding panel. it is 7" x 10". and i am giving it away. i've been wanting to have a blog giveaway for some time, and the time has finally arrived. here's how it works. all you need to do is leave a comment on this post. by leaving a comment you are automatically entered into the contest (as long as your comment offers a way for me to get in touch with you, or you know that i know you). the contest will be open until next wednesday at noon, eastern standard time. at that time the contest will officially be closed and i will pick a random number. the person whose comment matches that number wins! for example, if i happen to pick the number 33, the thirty-third comment will win. oh, and one more rule: you can only post ONCE. if you win, i will send you the collage, signed by me, the artist, free of c...
