we are blessed

we sat in our living room on sunday, with piles of stuff everywhere and the garbage cans full of paper and shannon and i looked at each other and agreed, "we are loved."

saturday, the church threw a surprise baby shower for shannon, in which she was genuinely surprised (this is a major feet - she is almost never surprised). my mom and sisters came all the way from pittsburgh to attend. i knew about it for a long time, but once it was over, i just couldn't believe how much the church 'showered' us with gifts - a double stroller, books, gift certificates, clothes, toys, a pedicure for shannon, and stuff for jack, who will soon be a big brother (oddly enough, the father was the only member of the family completely left out of this ritual of gift-giving - what is that about?).

in all honesty, shannon and i have been in a kind of shock since the shower on saturday. she was literally shocked ("i'm sweating buckets here," she allegedly said during the festivities), but both of us are still pretty much stunned by the generosity and love shown to us by our church family.

i mean, let's be frank: we've only been here about nine months, and you could understand if the church people were still trying to get to know us, trying to heal from the loss of their previous pastors, and hoping not to get hurt by yet another pastoral appointment somewhere down the road. and yet, that hasn't been our experience at all. we have felt so welcomed here - so at home. we feel loved and cared for. the hospitality and generosity that we have received has been awesome. this shower just seems to represent for us nine months of love and acceptance. and so we sit in our home in an embarrassment of riches. we have stuff. we have community. we have a growing family. we just look at each other and shake our heads and keep saying

we are blessed.
thank you.

mary -

yes, i did get a belated birthday present, which was very nice, and which i will enjoy. but that's a little different. i was specifically referring to the 'showering' of gifts related to the birth of our little fetus.

ah yes...pictures. when you get around to it, post some on snapfish so that we can get some, since we don't have any pics of the day.

thanks alot julie. robbing a man of his only baby shower gift. i would wipe my tears, but mary insisted that i point at you.

I had told Shannon how blessed you guys were to be at such a generous church after coming from a church that seemed very generous as well. Obviously you've been at two churches that are very loving but it's most definitely a reflection of you and Shannon and who you guys are and how much you both invest into the church body. People are quick to want to bless those who are constantly seeking to bless others.

sorry, i already ate your gift. you wouldn't have liked it anyway. don't be mad.

i am so happy today because the blue sky is contrasting with the newly-green grass and it is so refreshing. i am totally ready for spring! i'm sure you are for many reasons... new babies, for one.

seth and i are going to see blades of glory tomorrow night. wanna go with? we might as well come out for the third weekend in a row. shannon won't mind, right? :)

megan,

thanks for those kind words. we always want to be a blessing, but we are just amazed at how much this church has welcomed us in what feels like such a short time. how could they even really know us yet? and yet they clearly love us. it is awesome and humbling. and energizing!

bad haircuts (for a laugh)

everybody needs to laugh.  one good way i have found to make that happen is to do a simple google image search for 'bad haircut.'  when you do so, some of the following gems show up.  thankfully, my 9th grade school picture does NOT show up.  otherwise, it would certianly make this list!  please laugh freely and without inhibition.  thank you and have a nice day.

happiness is dry underwear

we started potty training jack on thursday. we followed a program called POTTY TRAIN IN ONE DAY, which, by the way, i think is kind of crazy. i mean, if someone were to offer you a book called, "ACHIEVE WORLD PEACE IN ONE DAY" i don't think you would take it seriously. and yet here we are, trying to accomplish an equally daunting task in one 24-hour period. it is intense. the day is shrouded in a lie because as soon as your happily diapered child wakes up you tell him that it is a big party. we had balloons and streamers and noisemakers and silly string - all the trappings of a legitimate party. but it is most certainly not a party. it is a hellishly exhausting day. as soon as jack got out of bed, we gave him a present: an anatomically correct doll that wets himself. jack named him quincy. several times quincy successfully peed in the potty and even had an accident or two in his "big boy underwear." he also dropped a deuce that looked and smelled sus...

i'm giving away the swamp

so this is a collage called swamp. i made it in february of last year. it is currently framed in a homemade, hand-painted frame. it is paper collage on a book binding panel. it is 7" x 10". and i am giving it away. i've been wanting to have a blog giveaway for some time, and the time has finally arrived. here's how it works. all you need to do is leave a comment on this post. by leaving a comment you are automatically entered into the contest (as long as your comment offers a way for me to get in touch with you, or you know that i know you). the contest will be open until next wednesday at noon, eastern standard time. at that time the contest will officially be closed and i will pick a random number. the person whose comment matches that number wins! for example, if i happen to pick the number 33, the thirty-third comment will win. oh, and one more rule: you can only post ONCE. if you win, i will send you the collage, signed by me, the artist, free of c...
