just a short little post today to say that i won't be around for the next several days. we're headed out to cincinnati for the national youth workers convention. i get to hear don miller again, and david crowder is leading us in worship, so i am pretty excited about that. not only that, but i found a steelers bar in downtown cincinnati, so i can watch the game sunday against the browns. it should be a great weekend. we're dropping jack and max at the grandparents and staying at the hilton right next to the convention center. this is the closest thing we'll have to a vacation in a while, so we are going to enjoy it, and hopefully learn and find some inspiration as well. so anyway, i will talk to you when i get back.

things i like about cincinnati: kings island. over the rhine.

things i don't like about cincinnati: the bengals. the reds.

over the rhine is a good enough reason to visit anywhere. you asked me how i got hooked on them, and i think it was through Joel, but i know i heard them before i met him. i swear that every album is their best album. i was born to love, was born to laugh. unfortunately i have only seen them twice in concert, though i try to whenever we are in the states. the last time was at a standing room only bar and i was like 8 mo pregnant, so i sweet talked the bartender into giving me a chair. but it was still worth it to hear karen sing that line about the $20 bill for topless dancer. awesome

i didn't have goldstar, but i did have skyline chili. it was really really good. it was weird being so close to wilmore, yet feeling like wilmore was a world i could barely imagine anymore.

over the rhine is incredible. that's all that needs to be said. i drove the neighborhood 'over the rhine' in cincinnati this weekend, and found that it is basically a ghetto.

i am going to go see otr in philadelphia in a couple of weeks. i love seeing them in concert. when i reflect on otr i can honestly say that they have, over the years, truly inspired me to live a more full life, a more passionate life, and a more honest life. that their art has been able to do that for me speaks volumes, i think...

yeah, tell me more about the servant thing. i knew that linford and ric (hordinski) used to be in a christian outfit named servant, but i wasn't sure if it was the same servant you and i used to listen to when we were lame 13-year olds. i have tried researching this but haven't been able to find much info. even the extensive (and well-written) encyclopedia of Christian music doesn't give much background.
linford and karin no longer live in the otr neighborhood, as they bought a farm (i think in ky). they call it the nowhere farm.

if i were n. dynamite, i would say, "they are pretty much the awesomest band ever. freakin' sweet."

bad haircuts (for a laugh)

everybody needs to laugh.  one good way i have found to make that happen is to do a simple google image search for 'bad haircut.'  when you do so, some of the following gems show up.  thankfully, my 9th grade school picture does NOT show up.  otherwise, it would certianly make this list!  please laugh freely and without inhibition.  thank you and have a nice day.

happiness is dry underwear

we started potty training jack on thursday. we followed a program called POTTY TRAIN IN ONE DAY, which, by the way, i think is kind of crazy. i mean, if someone were to offer you a book called, "ACHIEVE WORLD PEACE IN ONE DAY" i don't think you would take it seriously. and yet here we are, trying to accomplish an equally daunting task in one 24-hour period. it is intense. the day is shrouded in a lie because as soon as your happily diapered child wakes up you tell him that it is a big party. we had balloons and streamers and noisemakers and silly string - all the trappings of a legitimate party. but it is most certainly not a party. it is a hellishly exhausting day. as soon as jack got out of bed, we gave him a present: an anatomically correct doll that wets himself. jack named him quincy. several times quincy successfully peed in the potty and even had an accident or two in his "big boy underwear." he also dropped a deuce that looked and smelled sus...

i'm giving away the swamp

so this is a collage called swamp. i made it in february of last year. it is currently framed in a homemade, hand-painted frame. it is paper collage on a book binding panel. it is 7" x 10". and i am giving it away. i've been wanting to have a blog giveaway for some time, and the time has finally arrived. here's how it works. all you need to do is leave a comment on this post. by leaving a comment you are automatically entered into the contest (as long as your comment offers a way for me to get in touch with you, or you know that i know you). the contest will be open until next wednesday at noon, eastern standard time. at that time the contest will officially be closed and i will pick a random number. the person whose comment matches that number wins! for example, if i happen to pick the number 33, the thirty-third comment will win. oh, and one more rule: you can only post ONCE. if you win, i will send you the collage, signed by me, the artist, free of c...
