sonic boom

the back page of the new york daily news today pretty much sums up this monday morning for me. while i am pretty beat from a weekend of camping that ended up somewhere in the dictionary between monsoon and noah: see flood , i am riding on some strong adrenaline this morning, after a strong sweeping statement by the yankees in these last four games against the red-faced red sox. i followed the other games on my blackberry, pitch by pitch from mlb.com, but i was home in time to watch espn's coverage of last night's game. i almost turned off the tv and closed my eyes after the red sox finally scored a run and took the lead, but something in my decided to try and stay up to watch the end of the game. boy, am i glad i did! back to back jacks by damon and tex, and the yanks swept the sox out of the stadium to go and nurse their wounds. this is a glorious time of year, as you know. baseball season is really heating up in terms of intensity as we arc towards the postseason, and ...

latrobe, pa - august 2009

big ben: can he focus on football? are you ready for some football? if not, you'd better start getting ready. that's what the steelers have been doing since saturday, when training camp opened in latrobe, pennsylvania. "oh no. not again. not steelers talk already ," i hear you saying. yep. if you don't like it, go read a blog about making muffins or something. here you will get a well-balanced diet of my ruminations on faith and family, art and music, and (unapologetically) the pittsburgh steelers (aka the greatest franchise in all of sports). so, as i was saying, its football time in latrobe, which means that several thousand fans head to over to st. vincent college to watch the guys in white and yellow shirts stretch and run drills and catch balls thrown by machines. it's not that it's all that exciting, but it's just that we've had to wait 6 months since we saw santonio hoisting the lombardi trophy on the platform, and we've had to r...

morning breath

i know i may be in the minority here, but i love mornings. well, perhaps i should be a bit more specific: i do not love the mornings before coffee. before coffee (b.c.), mornings are a russian roulette game of trying to walk down the hall to the kitchen without running into the wall, stepping on a plastic dinosaur, or peeing in the bathtub. i'm not a fan of b.c. mornings. ---- but once the coffee hits, i warm up to the prospect of the rising sun. i love the quiet of the house. i love the time alone with my thoughts and with God. i love the opportunity to crack open the bible and my journal. i love the warm creamy goodness of the morning's coffee ushering me into a growing sense of awareness. i love the way the sun stays low in the sky for a bit, making my house and my yard look like a different place for about an hour or so. it seems to me to be a holy time. --- and then i often hear jack calling my name. he has this thing about one of us coming to get him out of be...
