holiday eating tips

i don't remember where this came from, but i found it my holiday file. i don't totally agree with this life-philosophy. i just mostly do. my comments are in red.

holiday eating tips

1. avoid carrot sticks. anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the christmas spirit. in fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. go next door, where they're serving rum balls. (mmm....i love rum balls.)

2. drink as much eggnog as you can. and quickly. like fine single-malt scotch, its rare. in fact, its even rarer than single-malt scotch. you can't find it any other time of the year but now. so drink up! who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? it's not as if you're going to turn into an eggnog-aholic or something. its a treat. enjoy it. have one for me. have two. its later than you think. its christmas! (i've never had eggnog. it just sounds gross to me. if you rearrange the letters you can spell goggen, which sounds like dragon-urine or something. yuck.)

3. if something comes with gravy, use it. that's the whole point of gravy. gravy does not stand alone. pour it on. make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. fill it with gravy. eat the volcano. repeat. (i have no problem following this tip. i do it every year. i love mashed volcanoes. hey, what is the plural of volcano? where is dan quayle when you need him?)

4. as for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or whole milk. if it's skim, pass. why bother? it's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.

5. do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. the whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people's food for free. lots of it. hello? (i dont' know if anyone can relate to this or not, but i actually have a problem eating other people's food sometimes. i prefer food at my house. it's an ocd thing, i guess. my philosophy would be to go ahead and have the snack before you go to the party, just in case. then, if the food is good, go to town, baby.)

6. under no circumstances should you exercise between now and new year's. you can do that in january when you have nothing else to do. this is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog. (um, did someone say exercise? never heard of it....)

7. if you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted christmas cookies in the shape and size of santa, position yourself near them and don't budge. have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. they're like a beautiful pair of shoes: if you leave them behind, you're never going to see them again.

8. same for pies. apple. pumpkin. mincemeat. have a slice of each. or, if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. always have three. when else do you get to have more than one dessert? labor day? (man i love pie. i even ate mincemeat the other day and it was good. i just wish it were called something else. mincemeat? could there be a more disgusting sounding name?)

9. did someone mention fruitcake? granted, its loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. i mean, have some standards.

10. one final tip: if you don't feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention. reread tips; start over, but hurry. january is just around the corner. (like i said, i don't fully endorse this life-philosophy. but i do enjoy food! bon appetit!)

i agree about eggnog - also it's nice to have something unhealthy that I really don't like.

Have you seen the movie Waitress? Since you love pies, I think you'd like the movie.

You should go over to my blog and sign up for Sharing Christmas thing I'm doing - since I know your house is decorated and beautiful!
PS - Did Shannon tell you about my CD request???? I am eagerly checking the mail every day (but I guess I do that anyway)

Man I can't believe Shannon didn't know that. I'm in need of some new Christmas tunes...

As for the Sharing Christmas thing - you could post pictures earlier if you want...but what I'll do is on Thursday I'll list everyone's name/blog who is participating so people can "tour" around the various homes. If you post earlier and have another post up after that, just make sure you send me the link to the Christmas post so I can link directly to it. Also, feel free to post about it on your blog and have your readers come "sign up" at mine - the more the merrier! They don't have to know me - it's really open to anyone.

what, no cd burner? We've been burning both ends of the log (if you know what I mean) with "greg" cd's over here. Everytime I get in the car one of the boys asks if I'll put in a "greg" cd. they LOVE you. And they think of you everytime they hear the words New Jersey.

and that is how you're known in the Costain house.

NOw, these rules are HYSTERICAL! I love them, especially #7- I just love the number 7, btw. I, too, cannot stand to drink eggnog. I'm not a big egg person and cannot fathom having something like that pass by my lips.

Where did you find these. These are the rules I live by every day.. .oh wait, did I say that out loud?

bad haircuts (for a laugh)

everybody needs to laugh.  one good way i have found to make that happen is to do a simple google image search for 'bad haircut.'  when you do so, some of the following gems show up.  thankfully, my 9th grade school picture does NOT show up.  otherwise, it would certianly make this list!  please laugh freely and without inhibition.  thank you and have a nice day.

happiness is dry underwear

we started potty training jack on thursday. we followed a program called POTTY TRAIN IN ONE DAY, which, by the way, i think is kind of crazy. i mean, if someone were to offer you a book called, "ACHIEVE WORLD PEACE IN ONE DAY" i don't think you would take it seriously. and yet here we are, trying to accomplish an equally daunting task in one 24-hour period. it is intense. the day is shrouded in a lie because as soon as your happily diapered child wakes up you tell him that it is a big party. we had balloons and streamers and noisemakers and silly string - all the trappings of a legitimate party. but it is most certainly not a party. it is a hellishly exhausting day. as soon as jack got out of bed, we gave him a present: an anatomically correct doll that wets himself. jack named him quincy. several times quincy successfully peed in the potty and even had an accident or two in his "big boy underwear." he also dropped a deuce that looked and smelled sus

the crucifixion of Robert Lewis

"the crucifixion of Robert Lewis" mixed media collage with leaves, acrylic paint, and found objects by gregory a milinovich october 2023 this october i was invited to participate in a three day trip which was called a "pilgrimage of pain and hope."  while that may not sound super exciting to many of you, it actually really intrigued me.  i am the kind of person that wants to feel big feelings, and i am drawn to the deep places, so  i was interested in traveling to the scranton area, where the trip was planned, to see what it might look like to be a pilgrim that was wide-eyed and listening to the pain and the hope in the stories of others.   this trip included hearing the stories of immigrants to the northeastern pennsylvania area, and the work in the coal mines that many of them did.  it included hearing from folks who are working for housing justice and equity in downtown scranton.  it included hearing from those indigenous people who first inhabited that land.
