sleepless

sometimes i don't post to my blog for a day because i am feeling uninspired. sometimes it is because i am way too busy to give much thought to it. sometimes it is because i have an idea but don't have adequate time to present it properly. sometimes its because i choose to re-watch my tape of the steelers beating the ravens in the afc championship game. sometimes i just need a day or two off. but i don't think i've ever not posted because i was tired.

until yesterday.

i didn't blog yesterday. because i was way too exhausted. you see, i went camping thursday night. well, sort of. we're going camping as a family next week, so i thought i'd bust out the tent and air it out, and then once it was up, the boys and i decided we'd do a "boys' night out" of camping in the front yard. we had a campfire and cooked hot dogs over it, and then toasted marshmallows. we caught lightning bugs and and just enjoyed the summer evening. then we crawled into the tent, and onto the air mattress. both mini-milinovich's wanted to sleep next to daddy, so i slept in the middle. that was my major mistake: you never ever put the fat guy in the middle of the air mattress. it wasn't long before i was lying in a valley, covered in two hot, sweaty children. in case you're not getting the picture, this was not comfortable. or cozy. or even cute. it was cute for awhile, but then cute wore off about the time i took a sharp bony knee to the groin. while my 2-yr old just laid there - for hours - unmoving and statuesque, with eyes open, my 4-yr old slept like a mexican jumping bean. limbs everywhere. rolling like a tumbleweed of bones. sometime around 11:30 my phone buzzed with a weather alert: storms coming in the morning. awesome. i'm lying in a faultline in a steambath of a tent with the tazmanian devil of sleeping and a freakishly-rigid, open-eyed child from a horror movie, and to top it off, we're about to get dumped on with buckets of rain. doesn't get much better than that.

still, i soldiered on. something in me was determined to make it work- some father/son bonding thing. but when i still wasn't sleeping around 2:30, and when my wide-eyed child starting moaning like a ghost which began waking my tumbleweed child, sending him into even more furious twisting and turning and poking, i decided that the time had come for a sleep transplant. i carried them into their beds, fell into my bed, and by 3:00 AM i was finally sleeping. i can't tell you the last time i was still up at 3AM. its been a long time. and my body was reminding me of that with each aching step, each burning blink on friday.

so that explains why i didn't post. and why i'll never sleep in the middle of the air mattress again. hope you have a great weekend.

greg.

ps. look for a steelers training camp post coming soon! i've got the black and gold fever!

So are you still looking forward to camping or dreading it now? Matt had a very similar experience with the girls. You'll have to compare stories!

bad haircuts (for a laugh)

everybody needs to laugh.  one good way i have found to make that happen is to do a simple google image search for 'bad haircut.'  when you do so, some of the following gems show up.  thankfully, my 9th grade school picture does NOT show up.  otherwise, it would certianly make this list!  please laugh freely and without inhibition.  thank you and have a nice day.

happiness is dry underwear

we started potty training jack on thursday. we followed a program called POTTY TRAIN IN ONE DAY, which, by the way, i think is kind of crazy. i mean, if someone were to offer you a book called, "ACHIEVE WORLD PEACE IN ONE DAY" i don't think you would take it seriously. and yet here we are, trying to accomplish an equally daunting task in one 24-hour period. it is intense. the day is shrouded in a lie because as soon as your happily diapered child wakes up you tell him that it is a big party. we had balloons and streamers and noisemakers and silly string - all the trappings of a legitimate party. but it is most certainly not a party. it is a hellishly exhausting day. as soon as jack got out of bed, we gave him a present: an anatomically correct doll that wets himself. jack named him quincy. several times quincy successfully peed in the potty and even had an accident or two in his "big boy underwear." he also dropped a deuce that looked and smelled sus

the crucifixion of Robert Lewis

"the crucifixion of Robert Lewis" mixed media collage with leaves, acrylic paint, and found objects by gregory a milinovich october 2023 this october i was invited to participate in a three day trip which was called a "pilgrimage of pain and hope."  while that may not sound super exciting to many of you, it actually really intrigued me.  i am the kind of person that wants to feel big feelings, and i am drawn to the deep places, so  i was interested in traveling to the scranton area, where the trip was planned, to see what it might look like to be a pilgrim that was wide-eyed and listening to the pain and the hope in the stories of others.   this trip included hearing the stories of immigrants to the northeastern pennsylvania area, and the work in the coal mines that many of them did.  it included hearing from folks who are working for housing justice and equity in downtown scranton.  it included hearing from those indigenous people who first inhabited that land.
