burning bush

"burning bush"
journal collage
paper
gregory a. milinovich
just a note about this piece: from time to time i will make impromptu collages in my journal with whatever materials i have on hand (i usually have a bunch of stuff nearby) that reflect what i am thinking about/struggling with better than words can for me at that particular moment. this is just one such collage. usually they are pretty simple, less precise and left unseen. but i thought i would share this one with you, based on yesterday's reflections on the burning bush.

I really like this one. I think it's the greens with that strip of "negative-looking" paper. beautiful.

It's funny (for me anyway) you should be posting this week on God's name and the "I am" text because after your sermon on Sunday, I couldn't get U2's All Because of You out of my head. To wit:

I was born a child of grace
Nothing else about the place
Everything was ugly but your beautiful face
And it left me no illusion

I saw you in the curve of the moon
In the shadow cast across my room
You heard me in my tune
When I just heard confusion

All because of you
All because of you
All because of you
I am… I am

I like the sound of my own voice
I didn’t give anyone else a choice
An intellectual tortoise
Racing with your bullet train

Some people get squashed crossing the tracks
Some people got high rises on their backs
I’m not broke but you can see the cracks
You can make me perfect again

All because of you
All because of you
All because of you
I am… I am

I’m alive
I’m being born
I just arrived, I’m at the door
Of the place I started out from
And I want back inside

All because of you
All because of you
All because of you
I am

I've always understood/heard the "I am" not as a verb but as a noun: I am = You.

greg, thanks for the u2 lyric - that's really good stuff. bono and the boys are often singing about things a bit deeper than most of the music-consuming public realizes. love it.

as far as the verb/noun aspect of YHWH (I am), tell me more about your "i am = you" thing. who is the "you" in that equation? each one of us? all of us? in my sermon on sunday i want to talk a little bit about the verb-ness of the word, but i'm interested in what you are saying, too. tell me more...

Well it's always been for me a song to God and so I've always heard the "I am" in the song as the same "I am" that God tells Moses to use as a name. The song's saying "You can make me perfect again...All because of you...I am" With I am = You = God. Rather than, say, "All because of you, I am perfect again," which still works I just never heard or understood it that way. Make any sense?

it makes plenty of sense, greg. i was confused at first, thinking that you were referring to the "i am" from exodus 3, but you were referring to the "i am" from the u2 song. now i get what you were saying.

thanks again for your thoughtful dialogue. i enjoy it very much.

Good for you! It's very important to have a creative outlet. This is a good practice for emotional health.

bad haircuts (for a laugh)

everybody needs to laugh.  one good way i have found to make that happen is to do a simple google image search for 'bad haircut.'  when you do so, some of the following gems show up.  thankfully, my 9th grade school picture does NOT show up.  otherwise, it would certianly make this list!  please laugh freely and without inhibition.  thank you and have a nice day.

happiness is dry underwear

we started potty training jack on thursday. we followed a program called POTTY TRAIN IN ONE DAY, which, by the way, i think is kind of crazy. i mean, if someone were to offer you a book called, "ACHIEVE WORLD PEACE IN ONE DAY" i don't think you would take it seriously. and yet here we are, trying to accomplish an equally daunting task in one 24-hour period. it is intense. the day is shrouded in a lie because as soon as your happily diapered child wakes up you tell him that it is a big party. we had balloons and streamers and noisemakers and silly string - all the trappings of a legitimate party. but it is most certainly not a party. it is a hellishly exhausting day. as soon as jack got out of bed, we gave him a present: an anatomically correct doll that wets himself. jack named him quincy. several times quincy successfully peed in the potty and even had an accident or two in his "big boy underwear." he also dropped a deuce that looked and smelled sus

the crucifixion of Robert Lewis

"the crucifixion of Robert Lewis" mixed media collage with leaves, acrylic paint, and found objects by gregory a milinovich october 2023 this october i was invited to participate in a three day trip which was called a "pilgrimage of pain and hope."  while that may not sound super exciting to many of you, it actually really intrigued me.  i am the kind of person that wants to feel big feelings, and i am drawn to the deep places, so  i was interested in traveling to the scranton area, where the trip was planned, to see what it might look like to be a pilgrim that was wide-eyed and listening to the pain and the hope in the stories of others.   this trip included hearing the stories of immigrants to the northeastern pennsylvania area, and the work in the coal mines that many of them did.  it included hearing from folks who are working for housing justice and equity in downtown scranton.  it included hearing from those indigenous people who first inhabited that land.
