i'm not a goose

its too warm today for october. it should be all cidery and pumpkiny, but instead its the windows open and faint leftover smell of summer. still, sitting here in my office with the windows open gives me the opportunity to hear the concert going on outside. and so i'm thankful for the warmth. otherwise i would have missed it.

the geese are quite talkative today. there is a river that runs right behind the church and the geese are often here during the day. i think there are other rowdier spots where they go for nights and weekends, but during the day they seem contrite enough to gather near the big white church in the shadow of the steeple. and they swim and look for things to eat and talk. alot.

i don't know enough about animals to really understand if they are somehow communicating to one another with those throaty honks, but today, as i sit perched in my second floor office, i can't help but wonder what those sounds say to me.

i am busy. way too busy. i have too much to do and way too little time to do it. i'm afraid this is often a way of life rather than an occasional circumstance. i'm sure you know what i am talking about. i think most of us are there most of the time: overwhelmed. and that is where i am today. but as i was fracturing my to-do list into several mini to-do lists, marking them with various notations that indicate priority and timing and really do nothing to help me get the work actually accomplished but do help me feel better about it, i was jarred out of the land of overwhelmation by a cacophony of honking. not traffic. but geese.

i was struck by the blatant juxtaposition of my stressed and frenzied life with the relaxed life of the chatty geese outside my window. i sometimes feel this way about my dog. "oh, what a life," i'll say. "he just gets to eat and sleep and not worry about getting things done." and while one could argue that a life in which all we do is eat and sleep lacks a few important aspects of human life, there is something to be said for the simplicity of the animals.

today, i wish i were more like a goose. i just want to float in the river awhile. when i get the urge i might stick my head under that brown river to look for a tasty morsel or two to roll around in my mouth for awhile. or, if i start to feel a little stiff in my bones, i might stretch out my wings a bit and play a game of chase with that goose over by the reeds. or maybe i'll sleep for awhile in the sun, resting contentedly in my part in this great cosmic circle of living.

but i'm not a goose. i'm alot of things todayi, but not a goose. and i am anything but resting contentedly in the glorious gift of being alive. i am too busy to even notice i'm alive. but the geese are trying their best to remind me.

and so, my word for myself (and maybe for you, too) today is slow down. take a breath for a moment and recognize the exquisite glory of this moment. and then do what you need to do.

I know and agree. I keep thinking of those "oh so relaxing" days in Maine back in June. I miss them!

Honk! Honk!

i think i'll come back around tomorrow and read this, b/c I missed out on slowing down today and was on speed dial... if you know what I mean.

was just thinking of days gone by while I snacked on rice cakes with PB. What does that have to do with you? it reminded me of ordering dry toast with jelly at kings. and eggel bagels without the eggel. HA! I think you would have thought similiar thoughts about my current snack habits!

overwhelmation. coined by greg milinovich. used in the same sentence as cacophony...nice.

i don't believe in slowing down. i believe in running yourself into the ground and spinning so fast but no time to realize you are dizzy. i believe in not taking care of yourself. i believe in doing whatever if takes to get the job done despite health and social and family concerns. i believe you should always hit the bed at night dead...and wake up running. i believe in overwhelmation and that it should be desired. i, in fact, do not believe this...but why do i live like this?

i'd rather be a cat than a goose.

I saw geese yesterday. I thought of your blog, greg. And I was in a hurry to get where I was going, so it made me slow down and appreciate the changing colors of the leaves and the warm sunshine. Thank you!

(btw, my comment on facebook didn't mean anything, I think I'd had too much coffee) ;)

i just started reading the Simple Faith of Mr. Rogers...per your suggestion...and the first chapter is all about slowing down and that was an important message from Mr. Rogers. hence the yellow light at the beginning of each show. i thought it was an appropriate connection...so there you go :) i really like that book so far by the way :)

bad haircuts (for a laugh)

everybody needs to laugh.  one good way i have found to make that happen is to do a simple google image search for 'bad haircut.'  when you do so, some of the following gems show up.  thankfully, my 9th grade school picture does NOT show up.  otherwise, it would certianly make this list!  please laugh freely and without inhibition.  thank you and have a nice day.

happiness is dry underwear

we started potty training jack on thursday. we followed a program called POTTY TRAIN IN ONE DAY, which, by the way, i think is kind of crazy. i mean, if someone were to offer you a book called, "ACHIEVE WORLD PEACE IN ONE DAY" i don't think you would take it seriously. and yet here we are, trying to accomplish an equally daunting task in one 24-hour period. it is intense. the day is shrouded in a lie because as soon as your happily diapered child wakes up you tell him that it is a big party. we had balloons and streamers and noisemakers and silly string - all the trappings of a legitimate party. but it is most certainly not a party. it is a hellishly exhausting day. as soon as jack got out of bed, we gave him a present: an anatomically correct doll that wets himself. jack named him quincy. several times quincy successfully peed in the potty and even had an accident or two in his "big boy underwear." he also dropped a deuce that looked and smelled sus

the crucifixion of Robert Lewis

"the crucifixion of Robert Lewis" mixed media collage with leaves, acrylic paint, and found objects by gregory a milinovich october 2023 this october i was invited to participate in a three day trip which was called a "pilgrimage of pain and hope."  while that may not sound super exciting to many of you, it actually really intrigued me.  i am the kind of person that wants to feel big feelings, and i am drawn to the deep places, so  i was interested in traveling to the scranton area, where the trip was planned, to see what it might look like to be a pilgrim that was wide-eyed and listening to the pain and the hope in the stories of others.   this trip included hearing the stories of immigrants to the northeastern pennsylvania area, and the work in the coal mines that many of them did.  it included hearing from folks who are working for housing justice and equity in downtown scranton.  it included hearing from those indigenous people who first inhabited that land.
