i've been to a conference this weekend at a christian college about creative arts and christianity. don miller was the main speaker, and i really enjoyed the chance to listen to him speak. i was absolutely inspired by the conference, and am excited about the results.

for those of you who don't know, i make collages. the picture above is a collage i made a few years ago. i have made probably a couple hundred and continue to make them. it is something that brings me great joy and satisfaction, but that is about it. i am just about creating art in a vacuum. i have done some pretty serious reflection on this issue, about how i am creating only for myself, and have recognized that it is certainly not the intent of the creative spark within us. however, i don't know how to share what i do with others. i am hoping this might be one such forum.

i am looking for some feedback here: what do you think makes someone an artist? for some reason, i have always thought that it has to do with making some money from your work. i have even thought that an artist isn't an artist unless their art is their livelihood. i know that this isn't always true, but it is just something i feel. for example, i could have started off the last paragraph by saying that i am an artist. but i didn't. i said i make collages. i have real problems saying that i am an artist. i don't know why. does anyone identify with this struggle? and even if you don't, what do you think makes one an artist?

i will post some more this week about some of the things don miller spoke about, and my reflections. in the meantime, let me know what you think about what it means to be an artist...

I definitely identify myself as an artist... and ali edwards helped me to know and accept that.

Check her thoughts out here:

yes, she is a "scrapbooker", but even more, she is a life artist. she has some cool things for sale in her cafepress shop, too.

an artist creates. it doesn't even have to be good. my special nun friend taught me that when you create something YOU have to love it...not the world...not the critics. so often we are conditioned to be our own worst critics...artists never happy with their product. she said...if we aren't happy with it, how do we expect others to be happy with it? all im saying is...create for yourself first. it feeds the soul. then when you do that, you are full enough to share it with the world. greg...its time to share. you could go farther than ever imagined...

i have a gam original too. but im greedy and want another :)

bad haircuts (for a laugh)

everybody needs to laugh.  one good way i have found to make that happen is to do a simple google image search for 'bad haircut.'  when you do so, some of the following gems show up.  thankfully, my 9th grade school picture does NOT show up.  otherwise, it would certianly make this list!  please laugh freely and without inhibition.  thank you and have a nice day.

happiness is dry underwear

we started potty training jack on thursday. we followed a program called POTTY TRAIN IN ONE DAY, which, by the way, i think is kind of crazy. i mean, if someone were to offer you a book called, "ACHIEVE WORLD PEACE IN ONE DAY" i don't think you would take it seriously. and yet here we are, trying to accomplish an equally daunting task in one 24-hour period. it is intense. the day is shrouded in a lie because as soon as your happily diapered child wakes up you tell him that it is a big party. we had balloons and streamers and noisemakers and silly string - all the trappings of a legitimate party. but it is most certainly not a party. it is a hellishly exhausting day. as soon as jack got out of bed, we gave him a present: an anatomically correct doll that wets himself. jack named him quincy. several times quincy successfully peed in the potty and even had an accident or two in his "big boy underwear." he also dropped a deuce that looked and smelled sus

the crucifixion of Robert Lewis

"the crucifixion of Robert Lewis" mixed media collage with leaves, acrylic paint, and found objects by gregory a milinovich october 2023 this october i was invited to participate in a three day trip which was called a "pilgrimage of pain and hope."  while that may not sound super exciting to many of you, it actually really intrigued me.  i am the kind of person that wants to feel big feelings, and i am drawn to the deep places, so  i was interested in traveling to the scranton area, where the trip was planned, to see what it might look like to be a pilgrim that was wide-eyed and listening to the pain and the hope in the stories of others.   this trip included hearing the stories of immigrants to the northeastern pennsylvania area, and the work in the coal mines that many of them did.  it included hearing from folks who are working for housing justice and equity in downtown scranton.  it included hearing from those indigenous people who first inhabited that land.
