no, this isn't my halloween costume. its napoleon. napoleon dynamite. (wait, your name is napoleon?). i finally saw this little campy creation. so i thought i would reflect on it for a moment.

weird. i mean, i get it. i get that he is sort of a gen-x/y shoegazing computer geek who reminds us of ourselves in some ways. i see my awkward adolescence in him. i see my moments of social ineptitude in him. but beyond that, what is this story telling us?

frankly, nothing. it is a loosely connected group of skits featuring the same characters throughout who deliver ridiculous lines of script in a deliciously deadpan manner. it's funny. it's just not all that meaningful.

not that everything has to be all that meaningful. it did make me laugh. just not as much as i thought it might.

and my biggest complaint: the ending. it just frizzled out. it reminded me of Monty Python's Holy Grail in this way, like they ran out of money or thought the film was getting too long.

so, i wasn't that impressed. anyone out there disagree? or agree? let's talk.

i did see another movie this weekend that i really enjoyed: it was called hoodwinked, and was a retelling of the little red riding hood story. it was clever and witty and quickly-paced. it made me laugh much more than napoleon. and it had something a little deeper to say about our preconceptions and prejudices. i would recommend this movie.

so there's my movie recap of the weekend. i also watched disc 1 of lotr: the two towers and a really bad version of a football game. but you already know that.

greg.

ps. i don't normally watch this much tv/movies. i just feel the need to defend myself here. i was sick all day saturday, and spent the day in bed, with the tv on. so there.

i think you need to watch napoleon again. for some reason, the second time is funnier.

hoodwinked- never saw it.

football game-- rather unfortunate. was charlie batch sick or something? did bill forget about him? hmmmm

my dear friend christina,

charlie batch isn't a tenth the quarterback that big ben is. big ben is a legitimate star in the nfl. just because he has a pass tipped doesn't mean you put in the subpar player. all that does is shakes ben's confidence even more than it already is. i think the problem is that ben is trying to do too much to make up for what is breaking down all around him. the receivers aren't getting open, the line is losing alot of battles, and the running game was horrendous. you put all of that on a quarterback's shoulders, and it doesn't look pretty. ben will be fine. its the rest of the team i'm concerned about. especially the offensive line.

i don't think i'll be watching napoleon again. we borrowed it from the library. i would rather read a book. in german.

what food are you offering me in your picture there? is it pie? i hope so because i love pie.

yum,
greg.

Hey Greg! Christina's friend Rachel here! I'm going with you on the whole Napolean Dynamite thing.....After hearing soooooo many high school friends talking about this flick, we finally broke down and saw it. My reaction was similar to yours. Parts of the movie were funny....it's always funny to shove tater tots in your pocket...but really? Didn't do it for me, and I wouldn't watch it again. It was, however, a good source for many a Young Life skit.

My dad had a subscription for the magazine The Economist....in German. Not a good read.

Peace,
Rachel

So sorry to touch your soft spot with Big Ben.

I would (and have) watch ND again a second time.

I am offering you a slice of toasted almond cake. It is a pic from my 30th birthday.

Ironically, Rachel is the one taking my picture. well hello Rachel.

I have to say that Hoodwinked was the only movie i have ever walked out of. and thats only because we were sitting in the awesome upper section of the retro guthrie when we realized we had come to the wrong movie. yeah. four people go, buy a ticket, sit through all the previews (wonder why all the previews are for kids movies) and then see a scene with a girl in a little red cape. whoopsie daisy, drive me crazy...

bad haircuts (for a laugh)

everybody needs to laugh.  one good way i have found to make that happen is to do a simple google image search for 'bad haircut.'  when you do so, some of the following gems show up.  thankfully, my 9th grade school picture does NOT show up.  otherwise, it would certianly make this list!  please laugh freely and without inhibition.  thank you and have a nice day.

happiness is dry underwear

we started potty training jack on thursday. we followed a program called POTTY TRAIN IN ONE DAY, which, by the way, i think is kind of crazy. i mean, if someone were to offer you a book called, "ACHIEVE WORLD PEACE IN ONE DAY" i don't think you would take it seriously. and yet here we are, trying to accomplish an equally daunting task in one 24-hour period. it is intense. the day is shrouded in a lie because as soon as your happily diapered child wakes up you tell him that it is a big party. we had balloons and streamers and noisemakers and silly string - all the trappings of a legitimate party. but it is most certainly not a party. it is a hellishly exhausting day. as soon as jack got out of bed, we gave him a present: an anatomically correct doll that wets himself. jack named him quincy. several times quincy successfully peed in the potty and even had an accident or two in his "big boy underwear." he also dropped a deuce that looked and smelled sus

the crucifixion of Robert Lewis

"the crucifixion of Robert Lewis" mixed media collage with leaves, acrylic paint, and found objects by gregory a milinovich october 2023 this october i was invited to participate in a three day trip which was called a "pilgrimage of pain and hope."  while that may not sound super exciting to many of you, it actually really intrigued me.  i am the kind of person that wants to feel big feelings, and i am drawn to the deep places, so  i was interested in traveling to the scranton area, where the trip was planned, to see what it might look like to be a pilgrim that was wide-eyed and listening to the pain and the hope in the stories of others.   this trip included hearing the stories of immigrants to the northeastern pennsylvania area, and the work in the coal mines that many of them did.  it included hearing from folks who are working for housing justice and equity in downtown scranton.  it included hearing from those indigenous people who first inhabited that land.
