hilarious interview



so i saw this interview on another blog, and i really wanted to put it up on mine, so here it is: stephen colbert interviewing anne lamott on the colbert report. i love everything about this interview: his antics, her uncertainty about how to handle him; his catholicism, her protestantism; his satire (where's the damnation?), her willingness to tell the truth about what she believes.

i wonder if any of you have any response to this interview...

I absolutely loved this clip. It was insightful, funny, and made my Monday. So if Presbyterians are the "frozen denomination," then what are the Methodists? Perhaps the "lukewarm denomination"? Oh well, thanks for sharing this great interview. Now want to read the book.

I would watch this, but I just can't stand Anne Lamott. It comes from watching several young ladies I knew at college discover her writing, find it "liberating," and then progressively become more and more pagan. (One describes her religious views: "I don't go to church, and I don't want to be called a Christian, but I do scream at God regularly and consider it worship.")

So tiresome...

mom - glad you liked it. i haven't read this book, but i have read another one of her books - traveling mercies - and despite what pete said above, thought it was really great. she is definately a little "out there," being a left coast liberal and all, but she is also disarmingly authentic and honest, and asks questions that seem more fundamental than anything else.

pete - people will always go crazy. from my perspective her writing isn't tiresome at all, but absolutely infectious. its funny, but i would have guessed that you would really like anne lamott, based on what i know about you. guess i shouldn't prejudge...

fair enough--I shouldn't prejudge either. I think Colbert is an absolute riot, or at least I have the few times I've caught him on his program (and on the White House press correspondents dinner...yow!) Just ifficult to get around experience sometimes, you know? And I think the main thing is not so much that people I've known have gone crazy, so much as it's been a sort of quasi-worship of every word that comes out of AL's pen. idolatry is so tedious.

pete, i feel you on the idolatry thing. when we start turning our spiritual guides into demigods, we demonstrate just how obtuse we are.

in a celebrity-obsessed culture, this is a real problem, i think. i have felt it in my own spirit, where an admiration for thinkers like don miller or rob bell has come within shades of grey of idolatry. so, thanks for that reminder.

still, i think ms. lamott has some really helpful things to say. i know that i was very much blessed by 'traveling mercies.'

and basically, colbert is ridiculously funny. he is very quick-witted, and the satire never stops. you're right, the white house press dinner was one of the funniest speeches ever. i have heard that he is very involved in his parish. in the interview he says that he is a sunday school teacher (and so is she). i don't know if i should believe him (the satire never stops!), but it is cool that he is an active Christian.

bad haircuts (for a laugh)

everybody needs to laugh.  one good way i have found to make that happen is to do a simple google image search for 'bad haircut.'  when you do so, some of the following gems show up.  thankfully, my 9th grade school picture does NOT show up.  otherwise, it would certianly make this list!  please laugh freely and without inhibition.  thank you and have a nice day.

happiness is dry underwear

we started potty training jack on thursday. we followed a program called POTTY TRAIN IN ONE DAY, which, by the way, i think is kind of crazy. i mean, if someone were to offer you a book called, "ACHIEVE WORLD PEACE IN ONE DAY" i don't think you would take it seriously. and yet here we are, trying to accomplish an equally daunting task in one 24-hour period. it is intense. the day is shrouded in a lie because as soon as your happily diapered child wakes up you tell him that it is a big party. we had balloons and streamers and noisemakers and silly string - all the trappings of a legitimate party. but it is most certainly not a party. it is a hellishly exhausting day. as soon as jack got out of bed, we gave him a present: an anatomically correct doll that wets himself. jack named him quincy. several times quincy successfully peed in the potty and even had an accident or two in his "big boy underwear." he also dropped a deuce that looked and smelled sus...
